This is Where Your Life and the Bible Intersect
8/31/10: As one who has read parts of the Koran (Qu'ran) and has a decent understanding of Sharia law as it relates to women, I am concerned about what Islam would mean for women in the Western world and how it would relate to rights and liberties as American citizens. Great Britain, in the name of diversity and multi-culturalism, has basically, until recently, turned a blind eye as to how women were treated under Sharia law. In certain Islamic communities, particularly in Pakistan, honor killings are still going on. Some of the honor killings have occured in Great Britain and in North America. If a woman does not marry the man that her family has arranged for her, or if she dates a man who is not of the muslim faith, or is with a different sect within Islam, her very life could be in danger. How Imam Rauf could say that America is the most Sharia compliant country in the world is beyond me. If that were true, more women would be treated as second class citizens and homosexuals would be severely punished. On top of that, for those who do not convert to Islam, we would either be punished or made to pay the jizha (or poll tax). Moreover, under Sharia law in order for a woman to prove that she was raped she would have have to four (4) male witnesses confirm the rape. To the best of my knowledge, this is not carried out in any American court, so I don't know what the Imam means when he says that America is Sharia compliant. I believe he has said that because that is the direction that he wants to take America in (God forbid), and as a muslim, he has a duty to proselytize and try to convert others to Islam. We believe in the First Amendment right which allows one to practice his or her religion of choice; however, when that religion wants to have an influence on the rights and liberties of all the inhabitants of a land and wants to supercede or nullify the United States Constitution, which guarantees our liberties, we must speak up. Sharia law is not compatible with the U.S. Constitution; so this issue is bigger than a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero. Again, we believe in freedom of religion, but we cannot afford to support a religion/ideolgoy which seeks to use the freedoms in the United States against us by transforming (God forbid) it into a non-free country, controlled/influenced by an Imam.
